Mold Prevention

When it comes to mold issues your best line of defence is prevention. While it is true that mold is always in our environment, significant mold issues can be avoided by adding a few steps into your home maintenance routine.
If nothing else, always remember, if you control the moisture, you control the mold. Staying ahead of water issues can go a long way to preventing mold.
To help you, we’ve taken the liberty of outlining a few extra tasks to consider adding to your annual home maintenance program. While it doesn’t cover everything, it does cover a few, relatively simple tasks that many people overlook or more likely, weren’t aware of.
Spring
- Clear the perimeter of your home of any debris accumulated over the winter paying special attention to all exterior drains, window wells and any other areas where water can accumulate
- Check and clean all eaves troughs and downspouts to ensure they are in good working order
- Check your roof for signs of water or weather damage such as lifting shingles or bowing of the roof surface
- Take a look in your attic to see if there are any signs of water damage or mold
Summer
- Check the grading around your home to ensure water runs away from your home
- Perform a perimeter inspection looking for any cracks or crumbling concrete, fixing any area’s where water could penetrate your home
- Inspect all windows and exterior walls, re-caulking (from the outside) any area’s where water can penetrate your home
Fall
- Prepare your home for winter ensuring water can flow away from your home without obstruction
- Check your attic to ensure you have enough insulation and address any issues you may find
- Ensure any cracks in the foundation, window caulking, eaves troughs and downspouts are in good working order
Winter
- After heavy snow falls, check for signs of heat loss and water intrusion on your roof (ie. patches of melted snow in unexpected area’s)
- Look for signs of icicles and ice dams forming around the edges of your roof and windows as these can be signs of improper drainage or other issues with your roofing structure
- Make sure snow is moved away from the foundation walls of your home
